How To Extend The Functionality Of The PSP

by Chris Channing

The PSP, or PlayStation Portable, is a product of great ingenuity and great technological achievements in recent years. The portable entertainment system can be used for a wide variety of things, from an MP3 player to a video player. But the problem arises at to exactly what one can put on the PSP, and whether or not the PSP downloads are free.

Movies or videos can be watched on the PSP, despite the belief that the PSP isn’t capable of playing the correct movie types. In many respects this is true, as the PSP uses the .MP4 video type. In order to correctly watch movies and videos on the PSP, PSP owners will have to download a video converter that will allow videos of one format be transferred to the .MP4 format that the PSP recognizes.

Next in line we have free PSP games. Again, it isn’t legal for PSP users to obtain free copies of popular PSP games downloadable for free. Instead, PSP users can find demos to such games and install them and try them out. Alternatively, PSP users can also download “homebrew” games- which are essentially games made by independent developers and are free to try, play, or distribute as stated by the author.

Like mobile phones, the wallpaper industry is rather large on the PSP. The PSP has support for users to use their own wallpaper to express who they are as a person- or even to list their contact information for others to see in case they lose their PSP. Either way, the long list of different wallpapers available will surely make a great addition to anyone’s PSP background.

Since the PSP is indeed such a mobile powerhouse, it can also provide support for several types of applications. One of the more interesting applications that proves to be quite useful in urban settings or for travelers is the PSP-Maps application, which basically acts as a GPS navigation system. Still other applications hook into the recent technologies of RSS feeds, and allow PSP owners to keep updated on their favorite resources via RSS.

Still other free PSP downloads are available- everything from hacks to modifications and themes. Whatever the case, it is important to note that one should never visit “shady” PSP resources that offer free downloads of PSP games, movies, or other copyrighted content. After all, getting into copyright trouble can be a very expensive and threatening situation, not to mention that one is cheating the developers and movie makers by engaging in such illegal activities.

In Conclusion

PSP downloads are a great way to maintain the value of one’s PSP. It is important, however, to keep things legal with the download industry and only download what is free and legal to download. Doing so will not only ensure that your PSP will be safe from harmful programs, but also allow PSP users to stay on the legal side of the matter. When free GPS programs and games are available anyway, it isn’t hard to stick to the good conscience and maintain a sense of pride and good will in downloading PSP content.
